History of Shila Devi Temple

Shila Devi Temple is situated in Amer Palace in Jaipur city of Rajasthan. It was established here by Sawai Mansingh II. According to the information received from the local people, Shila Devi was the clan goddess of the Kachwaha Rajput kings of Jaipur. The Lakkhi fair is held in this quite famous temple. In this fair, a huge crowd of devotees come here during Navratri to have the darshan of the Mother Goddess. Near the idol of Shila Devi, idols of Lord Ganesha and Kuldevi Hingla of Meenas are also installed.

It is said that earlier Meenas used to rule here. Two fairs are held here during Navratras and animal sacrifices were made to please the Goddess, which has now stopped. There is Jaleb Chowk in the palace of Amer Fort, in the southern part of which the historical temple of Shila Mata is situated. This Shila Mata is also considered to be the family goddess of the royal family. Because the idol of Mother Goddess is engraved on a rock, it is called Shila Devi.

Architecture of Temple

Presently this temple is made of marble stones, which was built by Maharaja Sawai Mansingh II in 1906. The doors of the temple open only after the daily offerings and here special offerings of Gujiyan and coconut are made. In the upper part of this idol, from left to right, beautiful small-sized idols of Lord Ganesha, Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu, and Kartikeya, riding on their vehicles, are made. In the right arms of Shiladevi, the sword, chakra, trident, and arrow are engraved, and in the left arms, shield, abhayamudra, mund, and bow are engraved.

The statue of Shila Devi is made of black stone and this idol of Shila Devi is made in the form of Mahishasura Mardini. Always covered with clothes and red roses, only the mouth and hands of the idol are visible. In the idol, the goddess is pressing Mahishasura with one foot and hitting him with the trident of her right hand. That’s why the neck of the goddess is bent towards the right. This idol is considered miraculous. On the left side of Shila Devi, the idol of Hinglaj Mata of Ashtadhatu, the family deity of Kachwaha kings, is also built.
