History of Vidyadhar Garden
Vidyadhar Garden is a public garden located in the heart of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. This garden was built in the early 18th century under the patronage of Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, the chief architect of Sawai Jai Singh II, and was named after him as Vidyadhar Garden. It has been designed according to the principles of ‘Shilpa Shastra‘, the science of Indian architecture. The garden has lush green lawns, fountains, pavilions, and rows of flowers. This includes painting, pottery, sculpture making, wall and stone murals, textile designing, and many other formats. It was used as a resting place and pleasure garden for the royal family.
Due to lack of maintenance, the gardens fell into neglect and disrepair by the end of the 20th century, but in 2010, major restoration efforts began to return the gardens to their former glory, including adding walkways, water features, and greenery. Today, Vidyadhar Garden is a popular tourist attraction celebrating the rich history of Jaipur and a well-preserved example of the 18th-century Mughal and Rajput architectural garden style. Its restoration has re-established it as a beloved public space for locals and visitors to enjoy.
